It was confirmed recently this year that Stephen Hillenburg
, the man who created SpongeBob SquarePants, has been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). It is a disease that kills neurons in the brain and spinal cord, and could lead to death
if it gets too severe.
Being a fan of SpongeBob my entire life, hearing this news is just heartbreaking. You may know of ALS if you've done the Ice Bucket Challenge, which was created to raise awareness of the disease. Although there is currently no cure, a non-profit organization called the ALS Association is working to find one. One can choose to donate on their website
to help them.
As for me and others who can't afford to do so, all we can do is pray that he can beat his battle with the disease. Stephen Hillenburg will continue working on SpongeBob for as long as he can. He and his fam
